Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday strongly reacted to recent anti-India statements made by certain leaders in Bangladesh. Speaking at a public event, he described the idea of merging India’s northeastern states with Bangladesh as irrational and dangerous. Sarma emphasized that India, being a sovereign nation with significant economic and strategic power, will not tolerate any attempts or even discussions about altering its territorial integrity.
Controversial Statement by Bangladesh Leader
The Chief Minister’s remarks came in response to comments made by Hasnat Abdullah, a senior leader of the newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP) in Bangladesh. Abdullah had suggested on Monday that Dhaka should work toward separating India’s northeastern states and support separatist elements in the region. These statements have sparked widespread concern in Assam and across India, highlighting the sensitivity of cross-border political rhetoric affecting national unity.
Assam CM’s Strong Response
Addressing the issue, CM Sarma said, “For the past year, there have been repeated statements from that country suggesting that Northeast India should be separated and made part of Bangladesh. India is a large country, a nuclear power, and the world’s fourth-largest economy. How can Bangladesh even think like this?” He strongly condemned the notion, stressing that even entertaining such thoughts is unacceptable. Sarma further pointed out that such statements reflect a flawed mentality and ignorance of India’s strength, stability, and the democratic will of its people.
India’s Stance on Territorial Integrity
Sarma’s remarks underscore India’s firm position on protecting its territorial boundaries and sovereignty. The northeastern states, rich in cultural diversity and strategic importance, are an integral part of India, and any external attempts to influence or destabilize the region will be firmly opposed. Leaders across India have reiterated that dialogues and diplomatic channels should be used responsibly, without making provocative statements that could harm bilateral relations. Sarma’s response sends a clear message that India will not remain silent against threats to its unity and integrity.
