Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday that although there were some limited protests in the state over the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act, peace prevailed in Assam despite this. He attributed this situation to the strong preparation of Assam Police and communal harmony in the state.
Preparation of Assam Police appreciated
CM Sarma posted on social media and wrote, “I appreciate the intense preparations made by Assam Police in maintaining peace and order. The people of Assam—irrespective of caste, community or religion—are united and are preparing to welcome our beloved Bohag Bihu with full enthusiasm.”
Despite having nearly 40% Muslim population, Assam has remained peaceful today except isolated protests in three places involving not more than 150 participants each against the Waqf Amendment Act.
My compliments to @AssamPolice for their extensive groundwork that helped…— Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) April 11, 2025
Bohag Bihu celebrations spread across the state
Preparations for Bohag Bihu have gained momentum across Assam including Guwahati. This festival marks the Assamese New Year and is celebrated every year in the second week of April with great fervour and colourful cultural programmes. There is a festive atmosphere in the state at this time.
Wakf Act opposed in other states
While the situation remained peaceful in Assam, some groups of the Muslim community in several other states of the country on Friday protested against the Waqf Amendment Act. The Act became law after the President’s assent on April 5. During the Budget Session of Parliament, the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with 288 MPs supporting and 232 opposing it, while it was approved by 128 votes in the Rajya Sabha. The Waqf Amendment Act 2025 aims to improve the management of Waqf properties, simplify the process of survey and registration and promote the development of Waqf properties with quick resolution of disputes.
