Assam CM Confident of Completing Jorhat-Dibrugarh Highway by Year-End

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the Jorhat-Dibrugarh section of the National Highway will be completed by 31st December 2025. Sharing the update on social media platform X, Sarma expressed “unanimous confidence” in meeting the deadline. His statement came after a high-level meeting in Delhi on April 7 with Dr. Krishan Kumar, the Managing Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). The CM called the development a major step toward fulfilling a key promise to the people ahead of the upcoming elections.

Key Stretch of Major Highway Project Nearing Completion

The Jorhat-Dibrugarh stretch is part of a larger four-lane highway initiative extending from Kaliabor to Numaligarh, a critical infrastructure project in Assam. According to Sarma, nearly 95 percent of the project has already been completed. This includes parts that run through the environmentally sensitive Kaziranga National Park. The full completion of this stretch is expected to boost connectivity and development in Upper Assam. “This marks yet another promise made to the people that will be fulfilled well before the elections,” the CM added.

Major Infrastructure Projects Discussed with NHIDCL

During the meeting with NHIDCL’s MD, Sarma also reviewed other major infrastructure initiatives in the state. These include the massive Rs 25,000 crore Guwahati-Silchar Expressway, the Numaligarh-Gohpur underwater tunnel, and national highway expansions from Baihata Chariali to Tezpur and Gohpur to Kulajan. Sarma highlighted the importance of speeding up work on the 19.28 km four-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra River, which will connect Dhubri in Assam with Phulbari in Meghalaya. This bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time and enhance regional connectivity.

Fertiliser Plant and New Highway Sanction

In addition to road projects, Sarma also met with Rajat Kumar Mishra, Secretary of the Department of Fertilisers, to discuss progress on the upcoming fertiliser plant in Namrup. Meanwhile, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari recently approved Rs 382.10 crore for a two-lane highway with paved shoulders, which will connect Majuli to Jorhat via NH-715K. This project also includes the construction of a 20.5 km flyover. With multiple infrastructure projects in the pipeline, the Assam government is making a strong push to upgrade connectivity and improve economic prospects across the state.
