A devastating road accident in Guwahati has claimed the lives of three young women, just a day after Assam mourned another fatal crash involving Bihu dancer Nishamoni Haloi. The latest tragedy occurred in the early hours of Sunday around 4 a.m. in the Mathgharia area, near a hospital gate. A speeding vehicle reportedly crashed into a stationary truck parked along the roadside, leading to one of the most severe urban road accidents in recent days and deepening concerns over reckless driving in the city.
Victims Identified as Students and Working Professionals with Promising Futures
The deceased have been identified as Puja Saha (26) from Goalpara, Akanksha Saikia (23) from Gaurisagar in Sivasagar, and Armina Ahmed. Armina Ahmed, daughter of CRPF personnel Aminul Islam posted in Noapara, Bongaigaon, was pursuing B.Tech in Civil Engineering at Assam Down Town University. Puja Saha and Akanksha Saikia were both working in the admission department of Royal Global University. The loss of three young lives has left families, friends, and educational institutions in deep shock and mourning, highlighting the devastating human cost of road accidents.
High-Speed Crash, Rescue Operation, and Driver Absconding Case
According to police reports, the vehicle bearing registration number AS01GP0562 struck the parked truck with extreme force, causing it to overturn multiple times after hitting a divider. The impact left the car completely mangled, trapping all three occupants inside. While two women died on the spot, Armina Ahmed was rescued alive but critically injured and rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where she later succumbed. The driver, identified as Samim Ahmed, fled immediately after the accident and remains absconding, prompting a large-scale manhunt by police teams.
Police Investigation Reveals Speeding, Rental Vehicle and Ongoing Probe
Senior police officials, including DCP Jayanta Sarathi Borah, visited the accident site as forensic teams began investigating the circumstances of the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that the vehicle was travelling at a very high speed before impact. Investigators also revealed that the car was rented through a travel agency and registered in the name of a Dhemaji resident. Authorities have seized the truck involved and are tracing its owner as part of the investigation. Police are also trying to contact individuals linked to the travel agency, though several phone lines remain switched off. The tragic incident has once again raised urgent questions about road safety and enforcement in Guwahati.
