Fresh political criticism has emerged over the recurring flash floods in Guwahati, with Rafiqul Islam strongly questioning the government’s handling of the situation. Reacting to the latest spell of heavy rainfall on April 20, the AIUDF legislator said the city continues to suffer from severe waterlogging despite repeated assurances and significant financial investments. The issue has once again brought urban infrastructure and drainage management under scrutiny, as residents struggle with disruptions caused by even moderate rainfall.
Waterlogging Disrupts Daily Life, Schools Shut and Vehicles Affected
Highlighting the ground reality, Islam stated that even a small amount of rain is enough to trigger widespread flooding in several parts of Guwahati. He pointed out that roads quickly become waterlogged, leading to massive traffic congestion and forcing authorities to shut down schools as a precautionary measure. In some areas, reports have emerged of vehicles being swept away due to the intensity of water flow.
