Assam’s Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia has raised serious concerns over alleged security lapses in strongrooms where post-poll election materials are stored. He has formally written to Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel, urging immediate intervention and corrective measures. Saikia described the situation as a “severe and alarming breach” of Election Commission of India (ECI) norms. His complaint comes days after Assam recorded a high voter turnout of 85.96 percent in the single-phase Assembly elections held on April 9, involving over 2.5 crore voters.
Allegations of Weak Security at Sibsagar Strongroom Facility
In his letter, Saikia specifically pointed to the strongroom at Sibsagar Government HS and MP School, alleging that basic security protocols were not properly followed. He claimed that out of multiple access points, only one door was secured with a padlock, and even that was not properly sealed. According to him, several other doors were either left shut from inside or secured with simple latches, making them vulnerable to easy access. He argued that the mandatory double-lock system required under ECI guidelines was largely missing.
Concerns Over Vulnerability of Election Materials
Saikia further alleged that even among rooms designated for storing sensitive election documents, security arrangements were inadequate. He claimed that only one door met proper safety standards, while another door containing Nazira constituency papers could reportedly be opened with slight external pressure. He also shared a video showing his interaction with officials at the site, where he highlighted what he described as serious lapses. According to him, such conditions put the integrity of election materials at risk and raise questions about the credibility of the post-poll process.
Demand for Urgent Inquiry and Action by Authorities
The Congress leader also raised concerns about the absence of proper security deployment at the storage site. He alleged there was no dedicated sentry post nearby, and that CRPF personnel present at the location stated their duty did not include guarding the strongrooms. Citing Election Commission rules, Saikia emphasized that election materials must remain under strict surveillance with proper sealing and double-lock arrangements. He has urged authorities to launch an immediate inquiry, ensure strict compliance with ECI guidelines, deploy adequate security forces, and take action against officials responsible for the alleged lapses.
