Tension gripped Assam’s Chabua area after unidentified persons allegedly fired two rounds of blank shots near the ancestral residence of Paresh Baruah in the early hours of Monday. The incident reportedly took place around 12:30 am, triggering concern among locals amid speculation over its intent. While no injuries were reported, the sudden firing has raised questions about possible motives behind the act in an already sensitive region.
Family Confirms Incident, Police Launch Investigation
Confirming the development, Bimal Baruah, elder brother of Paresh Baruah, said that two blank shots were heard near the residence, though no CCTV footage has been found so far. He added that the act appeared deliberate and aimed at disturbing law and order in the area. Police teams from Chabua Police Station immediately reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Officials stated that they are scanning nearby surveillance systems to identify those involved.
Local Residents Recall Similar Past Incidents
Residents of the area claimed that such incidents are not entirely new and have occurred in the past as well, contributing to periodic tension in the locality. Many believe the purpose of such acts is to create fear and disrupt the peaceful environment. While the situation currently remains under control, security has been tightened as authorities continue their probe into the matter.
Background Context and Recent Developments in the Area
Interestingly, the incident comes shortly after Arunodoi Dohotia, a former associate of Paresh Baruah, reportedly returned to his residence in the same locality after distancing himself from ULFA-I activities in Myanmar. The United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent, led by Baruah, continues to be an insurgent outfit advocating for an independent Assam. Authorities are now examining whether any recent movements or local developments may be linked to the incident.
