Assam Assembly Elections 2026: Political Excitement Intensifies with Gorlosa's Entry into the Congress

Assam Assembly Elections 2026: Nandita Gorlosa, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister in the Himanta Biswa Sarma government of Assam, has joined the Congress camp before the assembly elections. Garlosa has taken this step after being denied a ticket by the BJP. According to a statement issued by the Congress, Nandita Garlosa will contest the election from the Haflong assembly seat in Dima Hasao district on the party ticket. The Congress had earlier given the opportunity to its state unit’s general secretary Nirmal Langthasa from this assembly seat, but now he has agreed to give the party ticket to Garlosa.

Minister Garlosa joins Congress

In a statement, the Congress party said, “We are pleased to announce that Nandita Garlosa has joined the Congress party. She has been the voice of Dima Hasao for the past five years. She has always stood firmly for her beliefs and principles.” The Congress party alleges that Garlosa, Assam’s Sports and Youth Welfare Minister, had to pay the price for joining the BJP because Chief Minister Sarma is only interested in selling tribal lands to big companies.

Garlosa is the MLA from Haflong seat.

The Assam Congress says Garlosa represents Haflong in the Assembly, but the BJP has fielded Rupali Langthasa from the constituency this time. Nandita Garlosa joined the Congress immediately after resigning from her ministerial post and BJP membership. In her resignation letter to Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia, Nandita Garlosa wrote, “I am tendering my formal resignation from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party with immediate effect.”

The meeting with CM Sarma did not work out.

It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Garlosa’s home in Haflong last Sunday. However, neither Sarma nor Garlosa issued any statement regarding the outcome of the meeting. Voting for the 126-member Assam Assembly will be held on April 9, 2026, with the results declared on May 4.
