Assam: The political chessboard is beginning to unfold for the Assam Assembly elections. Jorhat is set to witness a high-profile contest, as former Assam Assembly Speaker and current MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami is set to challenge Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi.
Reacting to the official announcement of his candidacy, Goswami expressed surprise at Gogoi’s decision to contest the assembly elections from Jorhat. Speaking to the media, Goswami said, “I wonder why Gaurav Gogoi has come here to contest as an MLA. He has been an MP from Jorhat, why has he decided to contest the assembly elections now?”
What did Hitendra Nath Goswami say?
Emphasizing his role as a sitting MLA, Goswami said that even when Gogoi was an MP, there was a lack of direct coordination on development projects. He added, “He was the MP from Jorhat and I am the MLA here, but I don’t recall any discussion with him regarding welfare projects in the constituency.”
The younger generation will play an important role – Goswami
Goswami clarified that there is no personal rivalry between the two leaders. He said, “We have no enmity with them, so I don’t want to make unnecessary comments.” Regarding the role of young voters in the upcoming elections, Goswami acknowledged their growing influence. He confidently stated, “The younger generation will play an important role in this election, but they are aware and know who to choose.”
Speaking on the recent controversy, Goswami refrained from commenting on allegations linking Gogoi to Pakistan, saying, “I don’t want to comment on this. The people of Jorhat are educated and they know what is right.”
Meanwhile, Goswami announced a cultural initiative, revealing plans for a project honoring Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg. He said, “We are launching a project dedicated to Zubeen Garg, which will be constructed in Sotai, near the Science College.” Given the significant political influence of both leaders, the Jorhat constituency is expected to witness a fierce and intense electoral contest in the coming days.
