CBSE Board Exam Rules Revised from 2026: Option to Pass via an Additional Subject Discontinued

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken a major decision to prevent cheating in the Class 10th and 12th board exams. Under the new rules, if a student is caught cheating during the exam, their result in the relevant subject will be canceled. Furthermore, the option of passing a subject by substituting marks in the sixth or seventh subject has also been eliminated.

What was the rule earlier?

Earlier, the CBSE board had a system that if a student was caught cheating in a subject and his result was cancelled, he could replace that subject with the marks of his additional subject i.e. sixth or seventh subject. Due to this rule, many students passed on the basis of total marks. According to the previous records of CBSE, in the main examinations of the year 2025, there were about 30 to 40 percent students who were declared passed with the help of marks of additional subject despite being caught using unfair means.

Why did CBSE change the rules?

In the board’s review meeting, it was found that many students were taking undue advantage of the system of passing with marks in additional subjects. This could have affected the fairness and transparency of the examination. For this reason, CBSE decided to change this rule and implemented a provision for strict action in cases of cheating.

What will be the new rule now?

According to the new rules implemented by CBSE, if any student is caught cheating in any subject, the result of that subject will be immediately cancelled. Furthermore, the subject will not be allowed to be replaced with marks from any additional subject. Such students will be placed in the compartment category and will have to retake the exam in that subject.
