Assam CM Biswa Sarma Launches Major Youth Initiatives and Announces New Pay Commission

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma made several important announcements for the state’s youth and sports talent during his visit to Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts. Chief Minister Biswa Sarma distributed large sums of money under the “Self-Reliant Assam Mission.”

Chief Minister Sarma informed that checks have been distributed to 75,000 unemployed youth in the state under the “Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Assam Mission.” He stated that the first installment has been released to these youth. The Chief Minister said that with the successful implementation of this mission in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji, a major responsibility of the government has been fulfilled. 

In this connection, the Chief Minister inaugurated a beautiful stadium in Lakhimpur. He said that several new projects, including a swimming pool, would be launched soon.

Government employees’ salaries will be increased in Assam

In other news, the Assam government has constituted the 8th Pay Commission, 2026, to make major changes to the pay structure of its employees. An order issued by the Finance Department stated that the 8th Assam Pay Commission will be headed by former Additional Chief Secretary Subhash Chandra Das and will have seven other members. The last pay revision for Assam government employees was implemented on April 1, 2016, based on the recommendations of the 7th Assam Pay and Productivity Pay Commission. The 8th Assam Pay Commission will submit its report in 18 months.

“The Government is committed to strengthening financial stability, improving service delivery outcomes and enhancing administrative efficiency. It believes that changes in the pay structure should be accompanied by structural reforms in human resource management, adoption of technologies, results-based administration and rationalisation of workforce,” the notification said. 

It said the 8th Assam Pay Commission will not include All India Service officers, posts in different educational institutions with UGC or AICTE or technical pay scales and judicial service officers drawing pay as per the recommendations of the Shetty Commission and the second National Judicial Pay Commission. 

The notification further said that it will also examine the salaries paid to state government pensioners and family pensioners, especially having regard to fluctuations in the consumer price index and recommend the correct system for dearness relief, changes in pension and related matters keeping in mind financial stability.
