Assam News: The excitement for the elections in five states is gradually increasing. The visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National President Nitin Naveen, and then Home Minister Amit Shah to the northeastern state of Assam created an election atmosphere in the state. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and DK Shivakumar from Karnataka have also reached the state, adding to the excitement. The BJP has set a lofty target for a third term in Assam. Nitin Naveen, who recently visited Assam, set a target for the BJP to secure 50% of the vote in the assembly elections. In the last assembly elections, the BJP secured 33.2% of the vote. If this happens, the opposition could be reduced to 20 to 28 seats. The Assam Assembly has a total of 126 seats.
Bhupen Bora’s entry will be beneficial!
The entry of former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Bhupen Bora into the BJP is being seen as part of this strategy. While the Assam Chief Minister is openly playing the Hindutva card in the state, he is also targeting Gogoi through nepotism. PM Modi, who visited Assam, even said that Congress has now become the Muslim League Congress. Home Minister Amit Shah once again raised the issue of illegal Bangladeshis during his visit to the state. He said that Bangladeshis will be deported within five years. The BJP hopes to secure a hat-trick of victories in Assam with the support of Himanta Biswa Sarma and his popularity. The party also hopes to benefit from the entry of Bhupen Bora. If more Congress leaders join the BJP in the coming days, the opposition’s strategy could be disrupted. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has emerged as a popular leader in the state and is openly attacking the Congress.
MLAs’ Tickets Will Be Cut
The NDA government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma in Assam has the support of a total of 86 MLAs, of which the BJP has 67. The BJP could cut the tickets of approximately 30% of the MLAs. Consequently, approximately 20 to 25 MLAs may have to stay home. The party has completed a multi-level survey process for this purpose. MLAs who lack a good image in their constituencies, are less active, and are older may face the axe. The party has long experimented with cutting the tickets of sitting MLAs, and has been successful in doing so. The party is also working on seat-sharing with NDA allies to achieve the 50% vote share target. In the 2021 and 2016 elections, it won 60 seats.
