Priyanka Gandhi Slams Assam CM for Dragging Gaurav Gogoi’s Family into Political Attacks

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday, February 20, 2026, criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for repeatedly attacking Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi over alleged Pakistan links. Speaking after paying homage to singer Zubeen Garg at his cremation ground ‘Zubeen Khetra’ in Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati, Vadra said that dragging a political leader’s family and children into controversies is “wrong politics.” She emphasised that such attacks are unnecessary and divert attention from real issues faced by the people of Assam.

Politics of Positivity vs Polarisation

Priyanka Gandhi drew a distinction between leaders who engage in positive politics and those who indulge in polarisation. “Gaurav Gogoi is doing the politics of love,” she said, asserting that he is a leader committed to positivity and social harmony. According to Vadra, the repeated attacks on Gogoi reflect the fear of a leader who focuses on constructive politics rather than divisive narratives. She added that the people of Assam understand this dynamic, which is why such tactics are counterproductive and harmful to the democratic spirit.

Focus on Real Issues of Assam

The Wayanad MP urged the Chief Minister to redirect his attention to pressing issues like youth employment and women’s welfare rather than engaging in personal attacks. She highlighted widespread corruption in the state, calling it a betrayal of public trust. “Instead of targeting Gaurav Gogoi and his family, the CM should talk about the youth and women of Assam, who are looking for jobs and opportunities,” she said. Vadra stressed that governance and development should take precedence over personal political rivalries.

Paying Tribute to Zubeen Garg

Priyanka Gandhi also clarified that her visit to Zubeen Garg’s cremation ground was purely to pay her respects and not to make political statements. “Zubeen Garg was above politics. His cremation ground should be a sacred place and should not be used for political point-scoring,” she said. She emphasised that the late singer had spread a message of love and unity throughout his life, and his legacy should be remembered respectfully. Vadra’s comments came as a reminder that political discourse should uphold civility and focus on constructive engagement rather than personal attacks.
