Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday praised Governor Laxman Acharya’s speech at the opening of the Budget (Vote on Account) Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly. Taking to the micro-blogging site X, Sarma described the address as a reflection of Assam’s journey of resilience, transformation, and potential. He highlighted the state government’s efforts toward inclusive growth, saying that Assam today serves all its citizens equally—from youth to elderly, women to children, martyrs and servicemen, and from tea garden workers to service professionals. Sarma emphasised that the government is committed to ensuring equitable development and prosperity across all sectors of society.
Highlights of the Governor’s Address
Sarma noted that Governor Acharya’s address showcased Assam’s progress and legislative achievements. He praised the state government for enacting several groundbreaking laws in the Assembly and expressed optimism that the ongoing Budget session would bring additional initiatives benefiting all sections of society. The Chief Minister described the speech as a story that resonates with every citizen, reflecting both Assam’s development journey and its future aspirations. Sarma thanked the Governor for highlighting the state’s growth trajectory and applauded the focus on inclusive policies aimed at improving lives across the region.
Opposition Disrupts Budget Session
However, the opening of the Budget session on February 16 was marked by disruption as opposition MLAs stormed the Well of the House during the Governor’s address. The protest began just five minutes into Acharya’s 40-minute speech, creating a scene of chaos in the Assembly. Members of the Congress, AIUDF, CPI(M), and the lone Independent MLA left their seats, gathering near the podium while chanting slogans and holding placards. Some attempted to throw copies of the Governor’s speech toward the podium, escalating tensions within the House.
Security Measures and Aftermath
Marshals quickly intervened, removing the placards and confiscating the booklets, while more than 20 security personnel formed a protective cordon around Governor Acharya. Despite these measures, over 30 opposition members remained in the Well for the duration of the address, limiting the proceedings. The disruption highlighted the ongoing political tensions in Assam, contrasting with the Chief Minister’s message of progress and inclusive development. Observers noted that such protests underscore the challenges the state government faces in balancing legislative priorities with opposition demands, especially during crucial sessions like the Budget discussion.
