Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma files Rs 500 crore defamation suit against Congress leaders

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has filed a defamation suit of ₹500 crore against senior Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel, and Gaurav Gogoi. The action follows allegations leveled by the Congress leaders regarding the Chief Minister and his family’s wealth.

The case began at a joint press conference held in Guwahati on February 4. Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi claimed that an internal party investigation had revealed that the Chief Minister and his family possessed approximately 12,000 bighas of land across the state. Sarma has termed these claims as “completely false, malicious, and defamatory.”

Chief Minister gives information on X

The Chief Minister, while announcing this legal action on the social media platform X, said, “Today I have filed a defamation suit against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel, and Gaurav Gogoi, seeking damages of ₹500 crore for making false and malicious allegations against me through a press conference.”

Allegations of inciting genocide

In a separate press conference on Monday, Gaurav Gogoi also accused the Chief Minister of “inciting genocide” against Muslims through his video and demanded that the police take suo motu cognizance of the matter. The video allegedly showed Chief Minister Sarma aiming a rifle at two photographs. In one of the photographs, a man was wearing a skullcap and the other had a beard. The video was captioned “Point-blank shot.” Gogoi said, “The Chief Minister is spreading hatred by targeting a particular community. This is a direct incitement to genocide.” He also condemned the CM’s recent statements against the “Miyan” community. The Congress leader questioned the Chief Minister’s competence and demanded his resignation. He said the Chief Minister was acting against the dignity of the office. He pretended to be “secular” when he was in the Congress, but now he is merely playing politics.
