Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in five states of the country this year, including Assam. Assam, in particular, has been in the spotlight due to the continuous inflammatory statements made by its Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. On Thursday, the Chief Minister once again made a controversial statement, saying that Muslims should be harassed to such an extent that they are forced to leave Assam.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stirred a political storm with his remarks about “Miya Muslims,” drawing strong condemnation from opposition parties. Himanta said he encourages creating difficulties for “Miya Muslims” so that they leave the state.
We are against Miya Muslims – Himanta
In Assam, the BJP often uses the term “Miya” when referring to Bengali-speaking Muslims associated with illegal immigration. Expressing his dislike for Miya Muslims, Himanta emphatically stated that he is ready to do anything to drive them out of the state.
He said, “We are directly against Miya Muslims. We are not hiding anything. We say directly that we are against the Miyas.”
Bangladeshi citizens were present in Assam – CM
The Assam CM clearly addressed the public, urging them to harass them without fear. Himanta also claimed that Bangladeshi citizens were present in Assam and linked this issue to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
They will spread throughout Assam – CM Himanta
During this time, CM Himanta attacked the opposition. He claimed that the Congress party mishandled the issue. He said that if Congress had taken action earlier, the situation in Assam would not be like this today. He warned that if this is not opposed, this community will spread throughout Assam.
Congress protests, BJP offers clarification
The Congress party warned that such statements are an attempt to divide society and could disrupt social harmony in the poll-bound northeastern state. Congress leader Udit Raj said, “The consequences of such statements will not be good; they will be dangerous. These people don’t care about the country.” If this continues, the country could face turmoil. However, the BJP insisted that the Chief Minister’s “Miya” remark was directed at illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
