The Congress party has objected to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s “Miya” remark. On Thursday (January 29, 2026), the Congress posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Assam CM is violating his oath to the Constitution and sowing seeds of hatred in the country. The Congress posted a video of Himanta Biswa Sarma saying, “If a Muslim rickshaw puller asks for 5 rupees, give him 4 rupees… harass him thoroughly.”
BJP-RSS’s hateful ideology: Congress
The Congress stated, “This despicable statement is from Assam CM and Narendra Modi’s favorite, Himanta Biswa Sarma. Himanta Biswa Sarma is violating the Constitution and sowing seeds of hatred in the country. This is the hateful ideology of the BJP-RSS. This statement is not only outrageous but also a direct attack on Baba Saheb’s Constitution and our Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb (composite culture), which has given every Indian the right to equality. Narendra Modi and the BJP should apologize to the entire country for Himanta Biswa Sarma’s shameful act.”
Assam CM’s statement
The Assam CM said on Tuesday (January 27, 2026) that no Assamese citizen is facing any problem due to the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls, but only the ‘Miya’ (Bengali-speaking Muslim) people are facing difficulties with this process. Speaking at an event in Digboi, he said that people from the ‘Miya’ community cannot be allowed to vote in the state.
Should vote in Bangladesh: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Yes, we are trying to steal the votes of the Miya community. They should vote in Bangladesh, not in our country. We are making arrangements to ensure that they cannot vote in Assam.” He asked, “If the Miya community is facing difficulties in this regard, why should we be concerned?”
