Assam News: The brutal mindset of superstition has once again trampled on humanity in Assam. In Beloguri Munda village of Karbi Anglong district, a mob of villagers surrounded a couple, suspected of practicing witchcraft, and brutally murdered them. After the killing, they burned the bodies in front of their house. Police have so far arrested 18 accused, including four women, in this horrific case.
According to the police, on the night of December 30, they received information that 46-year-old Gardi Beruwa and his wife, Meera Beruwa, had been targeted by villagers who accused them of being witches. When the police arrived at the scene, they found the house damaged and the remains of a fire in the courtyard.
The investigation revealed that the bodies were burned after the murder to destroy evidence. IGP Akhilesh Kumar Singh said that this is a heinous crime and the culprits will not be spared under any circumstances.
He said that the case is being investigated scientifically, and strict action will be taken, similar to the Shivsagar case where the culprits received life imprisonment.
Police have seized blood-stained soil, a wooden stick, and a cow dung mixture from the crime scene, which were used to destroy evidence. A case has been registered under the Assam Witchcraft (Prevention) Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
