Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that the state government will intensify its crackdown against illegal immigration in 2026. He stated unequivocally that Assam will not be allowed to become a haven for undocumented foreign nationals. It’s worth noting that the government’s deportation efforts have always been questioned, with allegations that the deportations included Indian citizens from the Muslim community.
Assam CM’s Big Announcement
The Assam CM shared this information in a post on social media. He said that in 2025, the state government launched a large-scale push-back campaign to send back illegal Bangladeshi nationals, and this operation will be pursued even more rigorously in the coming year.
He wrote, “In 2026, we will be even more stringent in this effort and send back more people.” Sarma also informed that 18 illegal immigrants were sent back across the border on Tuesday night.
CM has consistently raised concerns
The Chief Minister has consistently stated that illegal immigration poses a serious threat to Assam’s demographic structure, social harmony, and internal security. He said that the state government is committed to protecting the rights of indigenous communities and enforcing the law without compromise.
Assam has always faced these problems
Sarma has previously stated that illegal immigration has been a major problem for Assam for a long time, especially in the border districts. He alleged that previous governments failed to take decisive action on this issue. The Chief Minister credited recent administrative measures, increased border surveillance, and better coordination between the state police and central security forces for the stricter action on the ground.
Assam Accord to be fully implemented
The Chief Minister also reiterated that his government is committed to fully implementing the Assam Accord, which includes provisions related to the identification, disenfranchisement, and deportation of illegal foreigners. He said that protecting Assam’s cultural identity, land rights, and demographic balance are among his government’s top priorities. Elections are approaching in Assam.
This new announcement regarding the repatriation of illegal immigrants comes at a time when the state is preparing for the 2026 assembly elections. It is expected that illegal immigration and border security will remain key issues in electoral politics. The BJP-led state government has consistently presented its tough stance against illegal migration as a core policy.
