Cold Wave Alert: Schools in Assam closed for a week due to concerns over students' safety.

Due to extreme weather conditions, the Assam government has announced the closure of all educational institutions in Kamrup Metropolitan district from December 31, 2025, to January 6, 2026, prioritising the safety and well-being of students. The decision was confirmed through an official statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office on Tuesday night. The order applies to all government and provincialised schools, including private institutions that have been taken over by the government. Normal academic activities are scheduled to resume from January 7, 2026, once weather conditions improve.

Advisory Issued to Schools and Parents

The closure decision followed an advisory issued by the Inspector of Schools (IS), Kamrup Metropolitan, urging educational institutions to remain shut for a week in view of the harsh cold conditions. School authorities have been instructed to inform students, parents, and staff about the closure and ensure that no academic or co-curricular activities are conducted during this period. The advisory also directed school managements to take necessary preparations for a smooth reopening once classes resume, so that academic schedules can continue without disruption.

Weather Conditions Trigger Shutdown

The move came after temperatures in Guwahati, the state capital, dropped significantly below normal levels. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city recorded a maximum temperature of 18.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which was 6.4 degrees below normal, raising concerns about student health, especially for young children. While the minimum temperature stood at 15.1 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal, the unusually cold daytime conditions prompted authorities to act. The IMD has also forecast light rain at isolated places across Assam, along with shallow to moderate fog until Thursday morning, further justifying the precautionary closure.

Similar Closures in Other States

Meanwhile, similar measures have been taken in Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) in Uttar Pradesh, where schools have been ordered to remain closed due to dense fog, falling temperatures, and rising pollution levels. Both government and private schools — including CBSE, ICSE, IB, and UP Board institutions — have been shut from December 29, 2025, to January 1, 2026, following directives issued by the District Basic Education Officer (DBEO). Authorities there cited poor visibility and health risks as key reasons for the decision. Across states, administrations continue to monitor weather conditions closely, stressing that student safety remains the top priority during this period of severe winter weather.
