Ten people of Bangladeshi origin were arrested on Monday in connection with the incident. According to the police, the attack was completely pre-planned.

The incident occurred on December 27 in the Bongalmora area of ​​Lakhimpur. Police received intelligence that Baharul Islam was hiding in the Sonapur area. Baharul Islam is accused of posting content in support of the Pahalgam terrorist attack. He had posted the content from a fake account, praising the terrorist attack. He had been absconding for a long time.

Based on the intelligence, a police team traced him to the Sonapur area and took him into custody. However, as the police were taking him away, a mob of more than 10 people attacked the team. The mob, armed with sticks and clubs, beat the police officers and forcibly freed the accused.

Lakhimpur SSP Gunendra Deka said, “After the terrorist attack, several people expressed support on social media. Baharul Islam was one of them. When he was apprehended, a group led by Atabur Rahman attacked the police team and freed him. It was a well-planned attack.”

Sub-Inspector Gokul Joysree and the vehicle driver sustained serious injuries in the attack. The police have registered a case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The arrested accused have been identified as Afazuddin, Ikramul Hussain, Fakhruddin Ahmed, Noor Hussain, Gulzar Hussain, Nazrul Haque, Kazimuddin, MD Abdul Hamid, Bilal Hussain, and Atabur Rahman.

According to the police, several of them have prior criminal records. The police also stated that Baharul Islam had previously been arrested in a fake gold case. He has gone underground again after being freed by the mob. SSP Deka said, “He will be arrested soon. More arrests are possible in this case.” Tensions remain high in the area following the incident, and the police have tightened security.
