Guwahati: Upasana Phukan, the only daughter of former Assam home minister late Bhrigu Kumar Phukan, allegedly committed suicide. Police said on Monday that 28-year-old Upasana jumped to her death from the second floor of her house in Kharghuli area of Guwahati on Sunday. Upasana lived with her mother. Soon after the incident, she was rushed to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and started investigation.
I had attempted suicide earlier too
According to the police, preliminary investigation has revealed that Upasana was suffering from mental health issues for a long time and was undergoing treatment. The police officer said, “She had tried to commit suicide earlier as well. On Sunday, when her mother was busy with household chores, Upasana jumped from the second floor.” The police also said that no suicide note has been recovered from the house.

Bhrigu Kumar Phukan was a prominent leader of the Assam Movement
Let us tell you that Bhrigu Kumar Phukan died in 2006. He was the Home Minister in the first government of Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) in 1985. Phukan was one of the prominent leaders who signed the Assam Accord. His name is counted among the influential leaders of the Assam Movement.
