In Assam, a strong message has been sent regarding vandalism ahead of Christmas; CM Himanta has assured action.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday assured strict and swift action against those involved in the pre-Christmas vandalism at St. Mary English School in the Panigaon area of Nalbari district. Emphasising the importance of peace and communal harmony, the Chief Minister said the state government would not tolerate any attempt to disturb social unity. Taking to social media platform X, Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens and institutions, stating that Assam stands firmly for harmony, coexistence, and the rule of law.

Four Arrested for Vandalism at St. Mary English School

According to the Assam Police, four individuals were arrested in connection with the incident that occurred on Wednesday, just days before Christmas celebrations. The accused allegedly entered the school premises and vandalised property, including Christmas decorations, outer lighting, street lamps, plant pots, and other installations. Some items were reportedly set on fire, causing damage and fear in the locality. The arrests were confirmed by the Chief Minister himself, who praised the police for acting promptly and assured that further action would be taken strictly as per legal provisions.

Identity of the Accused and Police Action

As per reports by news agency IANS, the arrested individuals have been identified as Bhaskar Deka (34), district secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP); Manash Jyoti Patgiri (32), vice-president of the VHP; Biju Dutta (34), assistant secretary of the VHP; and Nayan Talukdar (37), district convenor of the Bajrang Dal. The incident has raised serious concerns over religious tolerance and the protection of minority institutions. Assam Police stated that investigations are ongoing and that the law will take its course without bias or delay.

Political Reactions and Call for Communal Harmony

The incident also drew sharp political reactions. Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi strongly condemned the vandalism, calling it an attack on religious harmony and constitutional values. In a post on X, he said the desecration of festive and religious symbols inside a school was deeply disturbing. Referring to the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, Gogoi emphasised the principle of fraternity and criticised the state government, stating that such incidents should not be allowed in a diverse society. He further asserted that if Congress comes to power in Assam, a stringent law would be enacted to punish anyone found guilty of desecrating places of worship or religious practices of any community, including Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jains, or Sikhs.
