Assam: Students of Tezpur University in Assam have claimed to have received an informal letter from the central government stating that an inquiry into the allegations against Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh will be initiated.
This is being considered preliminary information. The United Front of students, faculty, and non-teaching staff in this matter has stated that their protest will continue until the government issues an official notification. The protest has been ongoing for more than 80 days.
Protest against the VC at Tezpur University
The handwritten letter states that Shambhu Nath Singh will be stripped of his administrative powers at the university. It also assures a timely investigation into all the allegations.
However, the university community has decided to continue the protest until a formal, concrete agreement is officially received.
Protest to continue until official notification
The Joint Director has stated that the status quo regarding the appointment of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dhruba K. Bhattacharya, will be maintained until further notice.
Why the controversy?
The Tezpur University controversy came to light when an official RTI (Right to Information) response revealed that several crucial documents related to Shambhu Nath Singh’s appointment and academic qualifications were missing from the office.
This revelation comes at a time when students and faculty have been protesting for the past 80 days demanding Singh’s removal.
