Aditya Dhar’s film ‘Dhurandhar’ is based on real-life events, a semi-fictionalized account of India’s fight against terrorism in Pakistan, particularly against the Lyari gangs of Karachi. Several characters in the film are based on real people, including the late, flamboyant Karachi SP Chaudhry Aslam Khan. The role of the martyred Chaudhry Aslam is played by Sanjay Dutt. Aslam’s widow, Noreen, has now spoken out about her husband’s portrayal in the Ranveer Singh-starrer film and has threatened legal action.
Chaudhry Aslam’s wife on Dhurandhar
Speaking on a Pakistani podcast, Noreen said that her husband had been a fan of Sanjay Dutt since watching ‘Khalnayak’ in the 90s and was confident that the actor would do justice to her husband’s personality. However, she had one complaint. In the film’s trailer, a character refers to Aslam as a devil and the son of a demon. Objecting to this, Noreen said, “We are Muslims, and such words are insulting not only to Aslam but also to his mother, who was a simple, honest woman. If my husband is misrepresented in the film or if there is any propaganda against him, I will definitely take all necessary legal steps. It’s strange that Indian filmmakers can’t find any other subject besides defaming Pakistan.”
Who was Chaudhry Aslam?
Born in 1963, Chaudhry Aslam joined the Sindh Police as an ASI in the 1980s and served in several towns of the Pakistani province. In the 2000s, he was appointed to lead the Lyari Task Force in the government’s crackdown on gangs in the Karachi township. He is credited with eliminating several major gangsters from the area. After surviving a Taliban attack in 2011, he was assassinated in 2014 by the Pakistani Taliban group TTP. Sanjay Dutt plays his role in Dhurandhar, a film based on Operation Lyari and the role of Indian intelligence in dismantling the terror network there. Dhurandhar’s Stellar Cast
