Tongue Color Symptoms: Many years ago, when modern medical tests were not available, doctors used to diagnose illness by examining a person’s tongue, throat, eyes, nails, urine, and feces. Changes in these areas become noticeable when a disease develops in the body. Although advanced testing is available today, you should still regularly check your tongue, throat, and nails. Sometimes, the tongue turns white, red, or blue, or sometimes, yellow spots appear on the tongue. This could be a sign of some changes occurring in the body. In Ayurveda, changing the color of the tongue is considered a symptom of nutritional deficiencies and diseases.
Ayurvedic doctor Acharya Manish shared a post on Facebook explaining how to diagnose illnesses by examining the color of the tongue. Yellow, red, blue, or pale tongues can indicate problems related to the liver, kidneys, digestion, and gallbladder. This should be taken seriously.

White tongue – If your tongue is becoming too white, it could be a sign of poor bowel function, gas, bloating, acidity, increased phlegm, and weakened immunity. If your tongue appears very pale or white, it could also be due to anemia and low hemoglobin. To combat this, eat fiber-rich foods, such as soaked figs and a little jaggery in the morning. This will increase iron in the blood and restore the tongue’s natural color.
Thick tongue – If the tongue is becoming thick, it could be the beginning of a fatty liver. This can also be caused by toxins accumulated in the intestines. If the tongue feels thick, consult a doctor.
Thin tongue with cut edges – This could be due to kidney failure. Kidney stones can also cause the tongue to appear thin and cut at the sides, increasing the likelihood of a kidney-related problem.
Blue and purple lines – Blue and purple lines on the tongue are symptoms of gallbladder stones or liver blockages. This is a sign that toxins are building up in the liver. It’s a major early symptom of liver-related diseases and also a sign of poor blood circulation. This can occur due to insufficient oxygen reaching the tongue and increased stress. To combat this, practice Anulom-Vilom and Pranayam daily and drink turmeric milk at night.
Red and swollen tongue – If the tongue appears excessively red, it could be due to an infection in the body. It is a sign of increased body heat, fever, swelling, and increased bile.
Red tongue at the front – If the tongue appears excessively red at the tip and sides, it could be due to mental stress. This could also be a sign of heart or hormonal changes. Therefore, calm your mind and avoid stress.
Yellow tongue – If the tongue appears slightly yellow, it is a sign of increased bile disorder in the body. This can also occur due to acidity or imbalance of bile juice. For this, chew 5 basil leaves and 1 cardamom after eating. This will calm the bile and improve digestion.
Pink tongue – If you have a pink tongue, it is a sign of your health. Pink tongue means that your digestion is good. All the doshas in the body are balanced. This means that you are adopting the right diet and lifestyle.
How to clean the tongue – To clean the tongue, clean it along with your teeth in the morning. Eat food rich in fiber. Drink 1 glass of lukewarm water. Consume Triphala and celery. Immediately give up the habit of eating late at night.
