Assam issues major ST status decision! Protests, politics, and elections… What twists and turns are in store?

In a significant move ahead of next year’s assembly elections, the Assam government has approved the Group of Ministers’ (GoM) report recommending the central government grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities in the state.

This decision comes amid ongoing protests by these communities over their long-standing demand. If the central government approves, Assam will be categorized as a tribal state.

GoM report on Scheduled Tribe status approved

The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, met at the Public Service Building yesterday evening and approved several key decisions.

A major decision was the approval of the GoM’s report on granting ST status to six major communities – the Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes (Adivasis). The GoM was chaired by Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, with Ministers Pijush Hazarika and Keshav Mahanta as members.

The report will now be tabled in the Assam Legislative Assembly and subsequently sent to the Home Affairs Ministry of the Government of India.

The Chief Minister said, “The report will be tabled in the Assam Legislative Assembly and then sent to the Home Affairs Ministry.” “I hope this report will reflect the expectations of all of us.”

He further said that the Tribal Affairs Department will send the report to the Assembly today. According to ANI report, the CM had said on Wednesday, the Tribal Affairs Department will send this report to the Assam Assembly, and the Speaker of the State Assembly will give permission to present the report in the ongoing session of the State Assembly.” The Speaker will decide when the report will be presented.”

Land Transfer for State-of-the-Art Heritage Museum

The Cabinet also approved the conversion and transfer of three bighas of land from the Government Muga Farm in Resham Nagar, Khanapara, under the Handloom, Textiles and Sericulture Department, to the Cultural Affairs Department.

This land will be used to build a modern museum to preserve and showcase Assam’s rich textile heritage. The museum, supported by JSW I&P Holdings Private Limited, will showcase the historic Vrindavani textile, which is on loan from the British Museum, London.
