Urination Posture: If you’re a little particular about cleanliness, you’ve probably told your partner at some point to pee while sitting to avoid dirtying the seat. But there are some reasons that could actually change this habit in men. Generally, peeing while standing is perfectly normal for men. Their bodies are designed accordingly. However, some recent research suggests that sitting may be more beneficial for many men.
Which is better: standing or sitting?
About 7,000 men worldwide were asked a simple question: Do you pee while standing or sitting? This survey generated so much discussion on social media that a urologist even advised that men should consider sitting as they age. In Germany, 40 percent of men pee while sitting every time. In Australia, a quarter of men say the same, while only 10 percent of men in the United States adopt this habit. In some countries, standing up is considered the right habit, while sitting down is considered a habit of the weak. In German, the word “Sitzpinkler” is used for these people, and is sometimes used as a taunt.
However, habits are changing. In Australia, sitting down is a rapidly increasing trend among young men. 36 percent of men use this method, while among older men, this figure is only 20 percent.
What is the correct method?
If men are healthy, there is not much difference between the two methods. Research has found that sitting down or standing up urinates in a way that makes no significant difference in urination time, flow, or bladder emptying capacity. This means that whether you urinate sitting down or standing up is your choice. Just make sure the seat is clean if you urinate standing up.
When does it matter?
Men who have urinary problems, such as a very light stream, intermittent urination, or a feeling that the bladder is not completely empty. For them, posture, i.e., sitting or standing, may matter. Some men experience better flow while sitting, while others find it more comfortable standing. In men with an enlarged prostate, standing urination often helps empty the bladder better. However, this doesn’t apply to everyone, so a doctor’s advice is essential.
