Assam: A day after seven opposition parties revived the Assam Sonmilito Morcha ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the alliance, saying it stands nowhere against the BJP. Speaking to the press during an event in Gohpur, Sarma claimed that the opposition bloc lacks public support and contrasted it with the BJP’s transparent governance record. He said, “Their politics is shrouded in secrecy, while the BJP has worked openly. Therefore, we have the blessings of the people. They (the alliance) are no match for us in the upcoming elections.”
Taking aim at AJP chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi, and Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, the Chief Minister said, “One of these Gogois lost to Sarbananda Sonowal in the last general elections, but the BJP’s Gogoi has been winning elections in the state. This trend will continue in the upcoming elections as well.”

Sarma then reiterated his earlier allegation linking Gaurav Gogoi and his family to the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI. He reiterated, “The wife is more of an agent, and he is less of an agent, and we have enough evidence of this.” He claimed that he had not spoken earlier because of the mourning in the state following the death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg. Chief Minister Sarma’s remarks came a day after leaders of the Congress, Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, CPI(M) and three other regional parties met at the Assam Assembly Secretariat to formally revive the Assam Sonowal Morcha. This unified front has resolved to fight the 2026 assembly elections together to challenge the BJP’s dominance.
The revival of this front marks a significant turning point in Assam’s political landscape, as it had previously disintegrated due to internal strife and lack of unity. Opposition leaders are now touting their new unity as crucial to “protecting the integrity of Assam” and countering the BJP’s “authoritarian rule.” With the opposition uniting under a single banner and the Chief Minister resorting to increased personal and political attacks, Assam appears set for a heated and polarised build-up ahead of the 2026 elections.
