Assam: The Indian Army is establishing the Lachit Borphukan Military Base at Bamunigaon in Assam’s Dhubri district. It will be located about 40 kilometers from the Bangladesh border. A military official stated that this new base, under the Tezpur-based 4th Corps, will house 1,200-1,500 personnel. A para-commando unit will also be deployed there.

Lieutenant General RC Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command, laid the foundation stone last week. Experts say such a facility will boost border security and assist relevant authorities in intelligence gathering.

This military base assumes special significance amid concerns about increased cross-border crimes, the activities of radical groups, and alleged attempts by the caretaker government of Bangladesh to exert pressure on the Chicken’s Neck Corridor.

Brigadier (Retd) Borthakur said, “Since the caretaker government came to power in Bangladesh, their attitude towards India has become extremely harsh. They also have nexus with Pakistan. The repeated high-level visits by Pakistani politicians and Defence Ministry officials are extremely worrying.”

Brigadier (Retd) Ranjit Kumar Borthakur said, “The decision to establish the camp is welcome given the current situation in Bangladesh. Previously, the nearest military bases were in Cooch Behar in Bengal and Tamulpur in Assam.” Defence spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mahendra Rawat stressed the importance of the base, saying it will strengthen the Indian Army’s operational capabilities and infrastructure in the region.
