Ruckus in Assam: Bangladesh national anthem sung at Congress meeting, BJP alleges "Greater Bangladesh agenda"

Ruckus in Assam: A political storm has erupted after Bangladesh’s national anthem, “Amar Sonar Bangla,” was sung during a Congress Seva Dal meeting in Karimganj district, Assam. The incident occurred in Sribhumi Nagar on Monday, and the video quickly went viral on social media. Assam’s ruling BJP has accused the Congress of playing “Greater Bangladesh” vote bank politics. Following the video’s release, social media users strongly criticized the Congress, calling it anti-national.

BJP Makes Serious Allegations Against Congress

Assam Minister Ashok Singhal attacked the Congress by sharing a video on Twitter. He wrote, “Congress has allowed the singing of the national anthem of a country that conspires to separate the Northeast from India. Now it is clear why the Congress encouraged illegal Miya infiltration into Assam for decades—to create a vote bank by changing the state’s demographics and realize the dream of a ‘Greater Bangladesh.'”

The Assam unit of the BJP called the Congress a “Bangladesh-obsessed” party. The party wrote in its post, “Just a few days ago, Bangladesh released a map showing the entire Northeast as part of its territory, and now Congress is singing the national anthem of that same Bangladesh in Assam. If anyone still doesn’t see Congress’s agenda, then they are either blind or complicit.”

Related to the ‘Greater Bangladesh’ controversy

The BJP’s comment is related to the recent incident in which Bangladesh’s interim chief, Mohammad Yunus, gifted a book to a Pakistani general, the cover of which featured a controversial map. The map showed the entire Northeast, including Assam, as part of Bangladesh. Against this backdrop, the singing of the Bangladesh national anthem at a Congress meeting further heated up the situation. Many on social media called it “treason” and demanded strict action from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government. One user wrote, “I’m not a law student, but common sense tells me this is treason. If this is true, then these people have no right to live under the Indian flag.” Another user said, “Ideologies may differ, but this is unacceptable. Congress now stands with everything that is against the country.”

Congress counterattack: ‘BJP insults Bengali culture’

Following the controversy, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi hit back at the BJP in a press conference. He said, “The BJP has always insulted the Bengali language, culture, and people of Bengal. Their IT cell has mocked the people of Bengal before. It is their ignorance that they don’t even know the history of Rabindranath Tagore, who wrote ‘Amar Sonar Bangla.'” Gogoi further said that the BJP uses Bengal and Bengali-speaking people solely for vote bank politics. He said, “People have now understood that the BJP practices the politics of division and hatred, while the Congress respects all languages and cultures.”

This entire controversy has heated up Assam politics. While the BJP is portraying it as a nationalism versus anti-national issue, the Congress is countering it by characterizing it as cultural ignorance and the BJP’s hatred toward the Bengali community. This controversy could further intensify the political atmosphere in Assam during an election year.
