As the Assam Assembly elections approach, political activity has intensified in the state’s hill districts. Meanwhile, Debolal Garlosa, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the NC Hills Autonomous Council, has once again found himself embroiled in controversy. This time, he has been accused of threatening to kill N. Jaylal Khelema. An audio clip is circulating on social media, allegedly in Garlosa’s voice. According to reports, Jaylal Khelema has filed an FIR at the Umrangso police station.
Congress launches a scathing attack: “How can a person holding a constitutional post issue a death threat?”
The Dima Hasao District Congress Committee held a press conference at Rajiv Bhavan on Thursday to condemn CEM Garlosa. Congress Vice President Aripam Boron, Media Coordinator Nelson Riyame, and former Executive Member Rathindra Thosan jointly addressed the media. Aripam Boron said, “CEM Debolal Garlosa holds a constitutional position. It is his duty to ensure peace and development in the district. But when the same person is threatening to kill others, how can law and order be maintained?” He further said that not only Jaylal Khelema, but his family has also been threatened.
Nelson Riyame alleged that this is not the first time such allegations have been leveled against Garlosa. He said, “On July 25th, CEM Debolal Garlosa also threatened to kill Ripunjay Langthasa, a resident of Maibang.”

Congress also raised questions regarding the death of Zubeen Garg
During the press conference, Aripam Boron also made serious allegations against the Assam government regarding the mysterious death of singer Zubeen Garg. He said, “The government promised a fair investigation, but after handing over the case to the CID, there has been no progress. Why isn’t this case being handed over to the CBI? Despite the BJP being in power at both the center and the state, the BJP itself is protesting on the streets, which shows that the truth is being hidden.”
Taking aim at the Chief Minister, he said, “The Chief Minister repeatedly says not to make Zubin’s death a political issue, but the public is seeing who is actually playing politics.”
Education irregularities and law and order issues
Aripam Boron also raised the issue of irregularities in the education department at the press conference. He alleged that the admission process for Rupali Langthasa, a BJP councilor and a B.Ed. student at Kalachand DIET, Maibang, had been rigged. “The principal manipulated the merit list and admitted students with low marks, while deserving candidates were ignored,” Boron alleged. He demanded that the controversial admission list be cancelled and admissions be based solely on merit.
The Congress leader also expressed concern about the rising crime rate in the district. He said, “A young woman from Sontila (Haflong) was abducted in broad daylight during Durga Puja. She was found unconscious the next day, but no arrests have been made so far. This reflects the dire law and order situation in Dima Hasao district.”
