Assam News: A 25-foot-tall bronze statue of the late singer Zubeen Garg, renowned for his contributions to Assam’s musical and cultural heritage, will be installed in Morigaon’s Charan Beel Park. The statue will honor his Assamese music and cultural identity. The announcement was made by Assam’s Public Relations Minister, Pijush Hazarika, during the groundbreaking ceremony held on Tuesday to mark Morigaon District Day. Sharing the information on social media, Hazarika wrote that Zubeen Garg’s “iconic legacy will always inspire new generations.” He also said that the memorial will pay tribute to the crucial role he played in shaping Assamese music and identity.
Statue Features and Construction Plan
The statue has been designed by artist Biren Singha and is a joint initiative of the Morigaon District Administration and the Tiwa Autonomous Council. Officials stated that the project aims to create a cultural landmark that showcases Zubeen Garg’s impressive musical legacy spanning generations. The statue will not only honor Garg’s contributions but also serve as a source of inspiration for future generations of artists and audiences.
Zubeen Garg’s Tragic Death and Subsequent Events
Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19 in Singapore when he drowned during a yacht event associated with the Northeast India Festival. According to official reports, he suffered a seizure while swimming near St. John’s Island and was pronounced dead at Singapore General Hospital. His sudden death sparked widespread grief in Assam, and thousands attended his state funeral in Guwahati. Following his death, allegations of negligence and improper conduct led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which made several arrests, including those of his manager, event organizers, and a family member.
Other Plans to Commemorate Zubeen Garg’s Legacy
The Assam government also plans to build additional memorials in Guwahati and Jorhat to honor Zubeen Garg’s artistic legacy. These memorials will not only commemorate his musical contributions but will also play a vital role in preserving Assam’s cultural identity and inspiring future generations. The 25-foot-tall bronze statue to be installed at Charan Beel Park will become an immortal memory of his musical and cultural contributions, which will always remain alive in the hearts of Assamese people.
