CM Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the new Commando Battalion Camp for Assam Police in Diring, know its special features!

With an aim to strengthen the capabilities of the Assam Police and transform it into a smart, modern, and effective force, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday inaugurated a state-of-the-art Commando Battalion Camp in Diring, Pabhoi area of Biswanath district. Located near the Assam-Arunachal border, the camp is the fifth Commando Battalion Camp established under a state government initiative. This initiative is being undertaken to modernize the Assam Police and strengthen its security capabilities.

Biswanath plays a leading role in the five Commando Battalions

Under the state government’s plan, Commando Battalion Camps are being developed in five districts—Karbi Anglong, Hailakandi, Cheradio, Sadiya, and Biswanath. The Biswanath unit is the first to be completed and inaugurated. The camp is established on 218 bighas of land and is estimated to cost ₹177 crore. This state-of-the-art facility can accommodate up to 400 personnel and is equipped with all the necessary facilities for modern security and training.

The camp features facilities such as a helipad, sports and parade grounds, a community center, a namghar, a modern computer lab, a school for police children, a 10-bed hospital for officers and their families, and a state-of-the-art fire safety system. These facilities aim to improve not only training but also the quality of life for police personnel and their families.

Inauguration Ceremony and Historical Significance

Chief Minister Sarma said during the inauguration ceremony, “In 2021, we raised five new commando battalions in Karbi Anglong, Hailakandi, Cheradio, Sadiya, and Biswanath. Today, with the inauguration of the fifth battalion camp in Pabhoi, it is a proud moment for the Assam Police and the state.”

The inauguration date also holds historical significance. On September 4, 2009, in Bhimajuli, just three kilometers from the new battalion camp, NDFB terrorists killed 12 innocent civilians. Sixteen years after its inauguration, the camp has emerged as a symbol of tolerance and change in the region. The Chief Minister said, “Today there are no terrorists in this area. The roads have developed, the atmosphere has changed—all this is proof that significant changes have taken place in Assam under the BJP government.”

Dignitaries who attended the ceremony

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries. Among those present were Director General of Assam Police Harmeet Singh, MP Ranjit Dutta, Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal, and MLAs Pramod Borthakur, Utkal Bora, and Diganta Ghatwal. The event not only showcased the modernization of the Assam Police, but also symbolized the state government’s commitment to improving security, training, and local governance.
