Assam Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, September 30, expressing serious concerns about the Assam Police investigation into the death of singer Zubin Garg. In the letter, Gaurav Gogoi stated that the police investigation was not proceeding in the right direction and that several aspects were being overlooked. He stressed the need for transparency and fairness in the case.
Allegations and Disputed Parties
In the letter, Gaurav Gogoi also alleged that one of the key accused in the case received substantial financial assistance from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and the Ministry of Tourism. Another accused was associated with the cultural wing of the state BJP’s youth organization. Gogoi wrote that this situation could impact the impartiality of the investigation and public confidence. He expressed his solidarity with the people of Assam, who are still mourning the death of their popular singer.

Zubin Garg’s Death and Events
Zubin Garg, a renowned Assamese singer, passed away on September 19, 2025, in Singapore. He had gone to Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival. According to reports, Garg experienced difficulty breathing while swimming. He was immediately administered CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and taken to Singapore General Hospital. He was declared dead in the intensive care unit there. The news of his demise sent shockwaves across Assam and the entire country.
Demand for Justice and Public Concern
Gaurav Gogoi reiterated in the letter that the public and Assamese people want truth and justice. He said the central government should take cognizance of the matter to ensure a fair investigation. Gogoi clarified that this is not merely a political matter, but a cultural and sensitive issue. Considering the sentiments of the people of Assam and Zubin Garg’s contributions, the justice process should be expedited and transparent.
