Daniel Langthsa made a big announcement after leaving Congress and forming a new party, there will be a political battle in the 2026 Assam elections

Former Congress leader and former member of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Daniel Langthasa on Monday, September 15 announced a new political party People’s Party. At a press conference held in Haflong, he presented his candidature from 113-Haflong (Scheduled Tribe Reserved) seat for the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Langthasa is the son of late Congress leader and NCHAC executive member Nindu Langthasa, who was murdered by DHD(J) militants in 2007. Since then he has been continuously demanding justice and raising his voice against corruption in the district.

Vision related to the people and talk of democratic change

Daniel Langthasa said that he has visited every village in the district and met people from different communities. He says the public is extremely disappointed with the current system as power and wealth are concentrated in the hands of a select few—about 100 individuals—while about 1.3 lakh people live in difficult conditions. “Youth have degrees but no jobs and opportunities. In countries like Nepal, youth have taken to the streets to fight against corruption. Our people also want change, but we will fight this battle within the democratic framework,” he said.

Criticism of national parties and focus on local issues

Langthasa clarified that his fight is not against individual leaders of the Congress or the BJP, but against the corruption and “exploitative political structure” that the national parties control. He said he does not want a government run from Delhi or Dispur, but “our goal is to bring power back to the people.” He also questioned the absence of a land policy in the NCHAC. According to him, thousands of acres of land have been handed over to outside companies in the name of “industrial development”, endangering the rights of local communities. Citing Article 244(A) of the Constitution, he emphasised on the protection of land and political rights under the Sixth Schedule.

People’s Party’s agenda and way forward

The People’s Party will soon decide its election symbol and prepare a manifesto that addresses the real problems of the local people. Langthasa appealed to the people to unite by putting an end to internal differences. He said that big forces exploit these internal weaknesses from Delhi and Dispur. Concluding the press conference, Langthasa said, “This is not just the birth of a party, but the beginning of a people’s movement – a movement to get back our political rights and future.”
