Ola and Uber drivers went on strike in Guwahati today. The protest came after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma called them ‘ignorant’ on the occasion of Independence Day. During the strike, drivers refused to serve in all corners of the city. They were holding posters in their hands, which read, “I am not unknown – I am a son of Assam” and “Assam government must protect the dignity of cab drivers”. This message was to directly reach the Chief Minister and the state government that the dignity of drivers cannot be ignored.

The union alleged that the state government is only benefiting the big and rich app-based company, while the exploitation of common drivers continues. They also raised the question that some illegal operators are taking permits without proper investigation. The union clarified that the permission granted by the government officials without proof raises suspicion and should be investigated.
