Assam News: In a significant move towards enhancing road safety and infrastructure, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the construction of five modern foot overbridges on the 18-kilometer-long Guwahati bypass of National Highway 27. The project, aimed at improving pedestrian access and minimizing road accidents, is part of a larger vision to modernize transport infrastructure in Assam. These overbridges are a direct response to the increasing number of pedestrians on the bypass, which connects key areas across the city.
Strategic Locations for Maximum Impact
The foot overbridges are strategically planned at five key locations with high pedestrian movement: Jalukbari (near Assam Engineering College), Tetelia, Gorchuk (near the CPWD office), Royal Global University Point, and Lalmati (near Khel Village). These points were chosen after detailed traffic and pedestrian surveys. Each location witnesses a high volume of daily foot traffic, and the absence of safe crossing options has been a longstanding concern for both residents and authorities.
Modern Amenities for Convenience and Comfort
Setting a new benchmark for public infrastructure, each foot overbridge will be equipped with escalators to ensure easy and inclusive access for all, including the elderly and differently-abled. This feature highlights the government’s commitment to inclusive development and comfort. Furthermore, to enhance security and visibility, streetlights will be installed along the entire stretch of the bypass. These additions are expected to make the bypass safer not only for pedestrians but also for motorists, reducing nighttime accidents significantly.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has played a proactive role in the planning and announcement of this project. He emphasized the need for pedestrian-friendly infrastructure to support the rapid urbanization of Guwahati. According to the Chief Minister, the total estimated cost of the project is Rs 30 crore, and the government is committed to ensuring its timely execution. The Chief Minister further stated that the project is slated for completion by July 2026 and will transform the way people navigate the bypass.
