The journey of Indian cinema's first superstar Rajesh Khanna reached from the college stage to the glamour of the silver screen

Rajesh Khanna, born as Jatin Khanna on 29 December 1942 in Amritsar, Punjab, was adopted and raised by relatives in Mumbai. He studied at St. Sebastian’s Goan High School and later at Nowrosjee Wadia College, Pune. His friends and teachers often noticed his love for theatre and drama during his school and college days. In fact, he was already a local heartthrob in college before he even entered films.

Rise to Stardom

Rajesh Khanna’s journey into Bollywood began with the All India Talent Contest organized by United Producers and Filmfare in 1965. He won the contest out of over 10,000 contestants and soon made his debut in the 1966 film Aakhri Khat. Though the film was critically appreciated, it was the 1969 release Aradhana, co-starring Sharmila Tagore, that made him an overnight sensation. The songs sung by Kishore Kumar and composed by S.D. Burman played a huge role in making him the superstar of the era.

Superstardom and Unique Legacy

From 1969 to 1972, Rajesh Khanna delivered 15 consecutive solo hit films, a record that remains unmatched. His films like Amar Prem, Anand, Kati Patang, Haathi Mere Saathi, and Bawarchi are still remembered for his unmatched charisma, emotional expressions, and powerful dialogues. He became known as the “First Superstar” of Indian cinema, and his unique style—tilted head, soft-spoken voice, and romantic gestures—captured the hearts of millions, especially female fans who reportedly wrote him letters in blood and married his photographs.

Struggles and Later Career

By the late 1970s, Rajesh Khanna’s magic started to fade with the rise of new stars like Amitabh Bachchan. Despite some hits in the 1980s like Avtaar, Amrit, and Thodisi Bewafaii, his stardom was never the same. However, he remained a respected figure in the industry and occasionally returned to television and films in character roles.

Personal Life

Rajesh Khanna married actress Dimple Kapadia in 1973, shortly before her debut film Bobby was released. The couple had two daughters, Twinkle Khanna (now an actress and author) and Rinke Khanna. Though Rajesh and Dimple later separated, they never officially divorced and remained connected through their family.

Political and Final Years

In the early 1990s, Rajesh Khanna entered politics and became a Member of Parliament from the New Delhi constituency (1992–1996) on a Congress Party ticket. Though not very active in politics, he remained a popular public figure. His last film appearance was in the 2011 movie Riyasat. He passed away on 18 July 2012 after battling a prolonged illness. His funeral was attended by thousands of fans and film industry colleagues.

Legacy

Rajesh Khanna’s legacy remains unmatched in Bollywood history. He was not just a star but a phenomenon. His contribution to Indian cinema is still celebrated, and his films continue to inspire generations of actors and fans alike. His title as the “First Superstar” of Indian cinema is a badge of honor that no one else has worn with such grace.
