What magic happened in 2024? MBBS students of Assam broke 10-year-old record in one go

What the medical students of Assam have achieved in the MBBS final examination in 2024 has never happened before. This time the percentage of students passing in the first attempt has reached 91.88% which is the highest figure till date. In 2023, this rate was 80.30%. That is, there has been a historic increase of 11% in just one year.

Old figures also left behind

If we look at the figures of previous years, the rate of students passing in the first attempt in 2014 was 71.09%. In 2015 it was 74.56% and gradually increased to 78.90% in 2018. But some declines were also seen in between like 78.75% in 2020 and 83.56% in 2022. This record-breaking success in 2024 has become an example for the whole country.

CBME system became the root of change

Additional Superintendent of Prajjyotishpur Medical College, Dr. Raktim Tamuli said that this change is the result of CBME (Competency Based Medical Education) system started by the National Medical Commission. He said that this system takes the students away from just rote learning and towards becoming practical and morally strong doctors. In this, 40% marks in theory and 60% marks in practical have been made mandatory for passing.

Percentage of those passing in the second attempt also increased

Students who could not pass the first time also performed better in the second attempt. In 2015, this rate was 86.81% which later came down to 75.48%. But after 2022, it also started improving and in 2024 it reached 90.91%. That is, this is also a positive sign that the preparation of the students is getting better.

A new era in medical education

A senior health department official said that this is a historic turning point. Apart from CBME, better academic support and infrastructure have also strengthened the students. Now students are moving towards becoming practically empowered doctors and not just for the degree. The overall passing percentage has also increased from 82.31% in 2023 to 91.77% in 2024.
