Assam: Himanta government accused of corruption, but Sonowal's reply shook Congress

Union Minister and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has completely rejected the allegations of corruption leveled by the Congress. He termed them as “absolutely baseless” and “politically motivated”. The Congress had alleged that corruption is more during the rule of current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma than during his tenure. Responding to this, Sonowal said that this is only a conspiracy to tarnish the image of the government which has the trust of the people.

Trust in BJP’s clean politics

When Sonowal was asked whether the current BJP government is more corrupt than his time, he outright denied the claim and said that the BJP is always committed to clean governance. He reminded the Congress that the party did nothing even after being in power for 55 years and has now lost the trust of the people.

Silence on return to state politics in 2026

Sonowal did not give any clear answer to the speculation about his return to state politics during the Assam Assembly elections in 2026. He clearly said that it is not a matter of his personal wish but will be the decision of the BJP leadership. Emphasizing the BJP’s discipline system, he said, “Nation first, party second and self last.”

Taunting Congress and India Block

Sonowal described India Block as a “fake alliance running in the media” and said that they have no workers at the ground level. He also took a dig at the Congress that making Gaurav Gogoi the state president will not make any difference because the party never did any ground work. He also accused the Congress of ignoring the region and promoting corruption.

Achievements of Modi government in the Northeast

Sonowal praised the achievements of the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last 11 years. He said that there has been a big improvement in infrastructure in the entire Northeast. Railway connectivity has increased and people’s faith in the government has returned. He asked the Congress whether the bridges being built on the Brahmaputra today were built during the Congress government? He claimed that even in 2026, BJP will form the government in Assam because the people want development and peace.
