Northeast rain update: Continuous rains in the north-eastern states have wreaked havoc. So far 30 people have lost their lives and many have been injured due to rain, floods and landslides in Assam, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. In view of the flood situation in many areas, the administration has issued an alert. The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rains in the next few days. Due to this sudden rain, life has been disrupted in the entire North-East and the difficulties of the people have increased.

Huge loss of life and property in Assam and Mizoram

According to PTI, 17 districts have been submerged and more than 78,000 people have been affected due to continuous rains in Assam. So far eight people have died due to floods and landslides here. Landslides occurred due to heavy rains in Mizoram in which four people have died, out of which three were refugees from Myanmar and one person has been injured. In this way, a total of five people have died in Mizoram so far. The administration has intensified relief and rescue operations but difficulties are being faced due to rain.

Situation is serious in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh

Six people have been reported dead in Meghalaya in the last three days. Two girls were killed by lightning while one person died due to drowning. About 1,100 people of 49 villages have been affected by landslides, flash floods and power cuts. In Arunachal Pradesh, nine people lost their lives due to landslides, out of which seven died in East Kameng and two in Zero Valley. Chief Minister Pema Khandu has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain, thunder and lightning from June 1 to 5 and has also predicted heavy rain on June 5 and 6.

Situation worsens in Imphal and Sikkim

Flood-like conditions have also arisen in Manipur’s capital Imphal due to continuous rain. On Saturday, waterlogging in many areas led to knee-deep roads and complete halt of traffic. Water entered homes and shops in low-lying areas, forcing people to make emergency arrangements to save their belongings. In Sikkim, about 1,500 tourists were stranded on Saturday as the main road was closed due to rain and landslides. According to officials, the search for eight missing tourists was hampered due to heavy rains and finally the search operation had to be stopped due to rising water level in the Tista river. One person died and two were injured while eight people are missing after a vehicle fell into the Tista river in Mangan district on Thursday night.
