A heart-wrenching incident has come to light from Sribhumi district of Assam. Here two jail security personnel have been arrested on charges of gang rape of a mentally challenged girl. It is being told that this girl was homeless and used to wander on the streets. At around 1.30 pm on Saturday night, these two security personnel forcibly dragged her to their government quarters near the district jail and raped her there. The patrolling police team reached the spot and caught both the accused red handed.
The accused security personnel are residents of Guwahati
Police said that the age of both the accused security personnel or warders Hareshwar Kalita and Gajendra Kalita is between 45 to 50 years. Both of them are residents of Panjabari and Boragaon areas of Guwahati. When the police got information about the incident, a team immediately reached the spot and arrested both. Additional Superintendent of Police Pranabjyoti Kalita said that the victim is mentally challenged and has been admitted to the hospital. In the initial investigation, it is believed that the girl was alone on the road at that time and the accused took advantage of this.
Police is investigating the matter seriously
The police officer said that a case has been registered against the accused in this case and both will be produced in the court soon. He also told that as soon as the information about the incident was received, the police team took immediate action and took the accused into custody on the spot. Now the police is investigating the matter thoroughly to find out whether the accused have any criminal record or someone else is involved in this case. The police also said that all possible help will be provided to the victim.

This incident not only shames humanity but also raises the question as to who is responsible for the safety of the homeless and mentally weak people wandering on the streets. Such people become easy prey for criminals every day because they have neither a permanent place nor anyone to take care of them.
