Assam News: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday shared important information about the state government’s ongoing campaign against drugs ‘Mission #AssamAgainstDrugs’. He informed that since 2021, drugs worth more than ₹ 2600 crore have been seized in Assam and more than 20,000 people have been arrested. The Chief Minister wrote on social media that we are contributing to the resolution of ‘Drug Free India’ and our fight against drugs continues.
More than 12 thousand cases registered, huge amount of drugs including heroin and opium recovered
According to government data, Assam Police has registered 12,398 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act since 2021 and 20,293 people have been arrested. The police have recovered a large quantity of narcotics including 553 kg heroin, 24 kg crystal meth, 1.61 crore tablets and capsules, 12.44 lakh bottles of codeine-containing cough syrup, 1.25 lakh kg ganja, 621 kg opium and 3324 kg poppy straw. Apart from this, cash worth ₹ 6.85 crore has also been seized in the action related to drug smuggling.
Continuous action on drug smuggling: Recently smuggler arrested with heroin
Chief Minister Sarma said that this campaign against drugs is not limited to figures only, but the action of Assam Police is equally strict even today. On the basis of recent intelligence, Guwahati Police stopped a vehicle coming from Silchar to Guwahati and recovered 395.67 grams of heroin from it, which is said to be worth ₹ 3.16 crore. Along with this, a drug smuggler has also been arrested. The Chief Minister said that the Assam Police is leaving no stone unturned to break the drug network and our fight will intensify now.
Major action in Kokrajhar and Golaghat too: Ganja and heroin seized
Earlier also, the police had carried out two major drug bust operations in Kokrajhar and Golaghat districts of Assam. In these operations, three smugglers were arrested and huge quantities of ganja and heroin were seized. Chief Minister Sarma also said that the aim of his government is to make not only Assam but the whole of India drug free. He said that this mission is not just a government scheme but a mass movement in which the participation of every citizen is necessary.
