The results of the Panchayat elections held in Assam are coming out and the Bharatiya Janata Party has performed tremendously. BJP is leading in almost all the panchayat bodies of the state. Regarding this victory, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has described it as historic. He claimed that BJP is getting tremendous support from the public and these results are a glimpse of the assembly elections to be held in 2026. In the panchayat elections, BJP has got a lead in more than 300 seats so far and the counting is still going on.
Chief Minister expressed confidence of a big victory in the assembly
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also made a big prediction about the assembly elections based on the results of the panchayat elections. He said that BJP will perform well not only in the panchayat elections but also in the upcoming assembly elections. According to the Chief Minister, BJP and its allies are likely to get 104 seats in the 2026 assembly elections. He said that “We are hopeful of winning 95 seats but in the end the decision depends on the mood of the public.”
Current status of Assam Assembly
There are a total of 126 seats in the Assam Assembly. Currently, BJP has 64 MLAs. Apart from this, its allies Assam Gana Parishad has 9 and UPPL has 7 MLAs. That is, the BJP alliance currently has a total of 80 MLAs. If 104 seats are won as claimed by the Chief Minister, it will be a big achievement for the BJP and they will get a two-thirds majority in the Assembly. This will strengthen the government and development works can be implemented rapidly.
Assam Assembly elections will be held in 2026
The next assembly elections in the state are likely in April 2026. The term of the current assembly ends on 2 May 2026. Therefore, the election stir will intensify early next year. BJP’s spectacular victory in this panchayat election is being considered as a semi-final for the upcoming elections. The Chief Minister’s confidence is indicating that the party has already started preparing for 2026. At the same time, these results are like a warning for the opposition parties that they will have to reconsider their strategy.
