Assam News: Chandigarh Police has taken a unique step to break the drug network. Two notorious drug smugglers of the city are now being sent to Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam. One of them is 64-year-old woman Bala and the other is Deepak Mittal alias Vicky. According to the police both are habitual offenders who have been found involved in drug trafficking repeatedly despite being arrested and convicted several times. Bala a resident of Sector 38-A an area considered to be a hub of drug trafficking has a total of 36 cases registered against her.
Case against Bala under serious sections yet acquitted in 47% cases
Bala has 10 cases under the NDPS Act while the rest are for serious charges like theft rioting and murder. Surprisingly she has been acquitted in 47% of the cases registered against her. This shows that she has been escaping repeatedly by taking advantage of legal processes. Police believe that she used to become active in the drug business again and again by taking advantage of the local network and identity. This is the reason why it has been decided to send him hundreds of kilometers away from the city.
Arrested under PITNDPS Act
The police have detained Bala and Vicky under PITNDPS under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. This act applies to those who are repeatedly found involved in the drug business. The police had obtained permission from the SAFEMA department of the Finance Ministry of the Central Government for this action. After getting the approval on Tuesday evening both were taken into custody and on Wednesday they will be sent to Dibrugarh jail. They will be kept there for at least one year.
A strategic step towards a drug-free Chandigarh
SP Crime Jasbir Singh said that this decision is part of the ongoing multi-level strategy against drugs. The police is not only arresting the accused but also investigating their property investigating financial transactions and working towards eliminating the entire network. The aim of this step is to completely break the local network of these criminals so that they cannot operate their business even from jail. This is considered a big and bold initiative towards making Chandigarh drug free.
