Five policemen have been suspended for beating a man in Assam’s Tinsukia district. Also, the officer who ordered these policemen to beat him has also been transferred. The order issued by the police on Sunday led to the suspension of these five policemen and the transfer of police station officer (OC) Biswajit Saharia. This action has been taken after allegations of attack by the police on a man.
Dispute took place during panchayat elections
According to official information, the incident took place during the panchayat elections on Friday. A man had argued with the police at the time of voting. After this, the man was brought to the Bordumsa police station the next day. Officials say that on the orders of OC Biswajit Saharia, he was brought to the police station and brutally beaten. When this incident reached the local people, they started protesting and demanded action against the policemen.

Strict action against policemen
After the incident, the local authorities immediately suspended two sub-inspectors and three constables. He has been put under house arrest at the district headquarters. Apart from this, OC Saharia has also been transferred and sent to reserve. Superintendent of Police Gaurav Abhijeet Dilip has ordered Dinesh Pratap Singh Rathore, Margherita Sub-Divisional Police Officer, to investigate the matter. Rathore has been directed to submit a report within 48 hours.
Re-polling in first phase of Assam Panchayat elections
Polling took place at 12,916 polling stations in 14 districts in the first phase of Assam Panchayat elections. According to officials, re-polling is required at 43 polling stations in five districts. Re-polling will be held on May 4 at 31 centers in Hailakandi, eight in Sribhumi, two in Lakhimpur and one each in Golaghat and Majuli. A total of 89.59 lakh voters were eligible to vote in the first phase and the polling percentage was 70.2. The second phase of voting will be held on May 7 and counting of votes will take place on May 11.
