In view of the increasing cases of economic fraud in Assam, the state government has taken a big step. So far, FIRs have been registered against 83 non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) in the state. Along with this, 81 complaints related to digital loans have also come to the fore since October last year. This information was given in the 15th State Level Coordination Committee (SLCC) meeting of the Assam government, which was chaired by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota on Saturday. In the meeting, it was emphasized that coordination between cyber cell, enforcement agencies and financial regulators should be strengthened to deal with financial fraud.
RBI, SEBI, and police officers were present in the meeting
Regional Director of RBI Guwahati, SEBI, ICAI, IRDAI, NHB and senior officials of Police Department also attended this meeting. According to official sources, it was clearly stated in the meeting that all the agencies will have to make a concrete action plan together to control financial fraud. Under this, not only legal action will be intensified but a statewide campaign will also be run to make people aware. It was said to increase vigilance against financial fraud, especially in rural areas.
Instructions for strict action against those taking deposits without permission
It was also decided in the meeting that stock broking companies will be regularly monitored and strict action will be taken against those collecting deposits without permission. SEBI has been instructed to provide educational material to make investors aware of the methods of fraud. Along with this, data of investment activities of the last two years has also been asked to be shared so that people can understand which types of investments are safe and which are at risk.
Warning campaign on social media against frauds being done by AI technology
The police department has expressed concern over the fraud being done by posing as fake FedEx officers and in the name of the crime branch. It has been observed that now scammers are confusing people using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. In view of this, it was decided that Assam Police will issue warnings against these scams through social media platforms. Apart from this, 50 officers of CID and Guwahati Police have been trained in collaboration with SEBI. The committee suggested that awareness campaigns should also be run regarding frauds related to OTP, QR code and fake trading apps and this campaign should be in local languages so that people in rural areas can also remain alert.
