Assam politics was rocked when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed on social media on May 1 that the minor children of a sitting MP of the state are no longer citizens of India. He posted on Twitter (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “I say with full responsibility that the minor children of an MP from Assam are no longer citizens of India. This is just the beginning. Much is yet to come.” Although he did not name any MP, it is believed that he was pointing towards Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, whom he has been continuously targeting for some time.
Claim to have evidence of Pakistan and Nepal visit
Chief Minister Sarma also claimed that he has strong evidence of Gaurav Gogoi’s visit to Pakistan and Nepal and this information will be made public before September. He said that “we have clear evidence of his visits to Pakistan and Nepal”. However, no documents or official evidence have been made public in this regard so far. Sarma also alleged that Gogoi’s wife is drawing salary from a Pakistani NGO while she is living in India. The allegation became even more serious when he questioned the citizenship of their children.
I say this with full responsibility — the minor children of one Member of Parliament from Assam are no longer citizens of India. But this is just the beginning. There is much more yet to be revealed.

Controversy deepens over citizenship
The whole matter gained further momentum when the Chief Minister was asked in a press conference whether Pakistani citizens are present in Assam. In response, Sarma said that “we have got evidence of only one woman so far” but he did not share the identity of that woman or any kind of detailed information. This cryptic statement has again brought the issues related to citizenship in the state to the center of discussion. Gaurav Gogoi also reacted sharply on social media and an open war of words has started between the two leaders.
