First phase of Assam Panchayat elections begins, CM Himanta Biswa's special message for voting

The first phase of Panchayat elections has started in Assam and with this, long queues of people were seen at the polling stations since morning. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to the voters to exercise their franchise. He wrote on the social media platform X, “I appeal to every eligible voter to vote in the first phase of Assam Panchayat elections today. Your vote will contribute greatly in strengthening democracy from the roots.” He called it a festival of democracy and requested everyone to participate in it.

BJP leader Prashant Phukan cast his vote with his family

Assam government minister and Dibrugarh MLA Prashant Phukan reached the polling booth with his family and cast his vote. Talking to the media, he said, “Everyone is happy with the development work of the BJP. This time, the BJP will win 90 percent of the seats in the Panchayat elections.” His confidence was based on the party’s organizational strength and past work. There was tremendous enthusiasm among the people at various polling stations in the state and people stood in queues to vote since morning.

State Election Commission made full preparations for fair elections

Assam State Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements to ensure fair and peaceful elections. Security forces have been deployed for the first phase of elections being held in 14 districts of the state and security personnel are present at every polling station. The State Election Commissioner had already said that more than 1.20 lakh polling personnel have been put on duty to conduct the elections in a peaceful and orderly manner. This first phase is being held in the districts of Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Cachar, Hailakandi and Sribhumi.

Voting for the second phase of Assam Panchayat elections will be held on May 7, which includes the remaining 13 districts of the state. Counting will be done on May 11. In both these phases, a total of more than 1.80 crore voters will exercise their franchise, which includes 90.71 lakh men, 89.65 lakh women and 408 other voters. A total of 25,007 polling stations have been set up. The NDA led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) has already won 37 Zilla Parishad seats so far. Of these, 35 seats have been won by BJP and 2 seats by AGP. Apart from this, 259 Anchalik Panchayat seats have been won unopposed by BJP and 29 by AGP.
